Karel Tuma

Born on 2nd of September 1975 in Prague in Czech Republic. Graduated from Business Academy. During years 1996-97 he worked as a stage technician in the theatre "Na Vinohradech" in Prague. In the year 1998 he was accepted to faculty of Film and Television academy of musical arts FAMU in Prague. The next big topic comes from contacts and sympathies with some left-winged movements (supported by magazines Mladý svìt and Konfrontace). When realizing and mainly following use of photographs he cooperates among other things with foundation Clovìk v tisni "People in need”. Tuma works in topic cycles and to all the topics he continuously comes back. He pursues long-lasting documentary projects with strong social legend. He is the founding member of photographic group Rovnýma nohama /Straight legs/. Since he completed his studies at Prague FAMU in 2005 he had been directing seminars on documentary photography at the faculty of social sciences at the Charls University - Institute for communication studies.
Awards
2000Praha fotograficka - price for the best black and white photograph. 1st prize in category "People in Prague" for the cycle "The Punkers". 2 nd prize in category "The city cronicle" for the serie "Prague under the slogan: Let´s rise against International monetary fund and World bank" 26.9.2000. Honour in the category "Prague´s problems" for the cycle"The life is living and getting lost on the streets".
2002Czech Press Photo - 1st prize, "Golden Eye" in the "Everyday life" category for"Worlds in between".
2003The Golden Nodule, the prize from Czech Association of advertising agency for the calendar 2003 made by Schneidersöhne company (foto. Karel Tuma, graphic design Telperion).
2004Nomination for the Prize of Jaromir Funke - obtained the 3rd place.
2004Acquired grant for young documentarist and fotoreporters from the East Europe countries Credit Suisse Masterclass.
2006Work on Florenc project, supported by a grant, connection with the Multicultural Centre in Prague.
2007 Realization of a project for the Centre of Migration Issues in cooperation with the Counselling Centre for Refugees, the itinerant exhibition presents portraits of immigrants who are applying for or have been granted asylum in the Czech Republic
2007 Participation in the project A picture chronicle of a day in the Czech Republic, photodocumentary of 24 hours in a country
2008 Half-a-year tutoring work on the programme of the Czech part of the project Cultures from Around the Block realized by Multicultural Centre Prague under the working title Together about one another.
2008 Realization of a calender – Ten years with photography / Karel Tuma, the company Baze 3
2008 Noordelicht Photofestival 2008 / Behind Walls.
